I’m always inspired when I see people break some of fashion’s biggest (perhaps outdated) rules. Rather than changing their style according to the “rules” of some higher fashion power, they wear what they want when they want. To be blunt, it’s kind of badass, and few do it better than supermodel Gigi Hadid.

Hadid has a knack for turning pieces that might go against long held fashion rules into ones you immediately want to add to your cart, like her highlighter-yellow dress that said “Autumnal colors, who?” and the controversial shoe-and-sock combo she made look cool with a skin-tight black dress. This week, she did something we’re told never to do after Labor Day: She wore an all-white outfit. 

While out for a walk, Hadid opted for a pair of optic-white, wide-leg jeans, matching sneakers, and an oversized version of the French-girl staple that can make anything look more elegant. Because, if you’re going to break a rule, why not look chic while doing it? Though the all-white ‘fit initially grabbed my attention because of its rule-breaking nature, I ended up obsessing over the crisp white button-down — and how it elevated the entire look in an instant.

The model opted for an oversized button-down, leaning into the stole-it-from-my-boyfriend kind of vibe. And, to make it all a bit sexier, she kept it mostly unbuttoned, fastening only a few in the middle, which allowed it to flow in a way that softened its structured, corporate feel. It was the cool-girl take on the wardrobe staple, and it convinced me that her slightly oversized top is exactly what my closet needs to make my everyday bottoms look chicer.

Take Hadid’s pants-and-shirt combo as proof. On their own, white jeans aren’t exactly thrilling — yes, they’re cute, but they’re still just jeans and can look fairly basic. But by pairing them with another closet staple that’s markedly more dressed up (that oversized button-down), Hadid was able to make sneakers and denim look luxurious.
